Understanding eSIM

The key concepts explained without commercial framing

01
What It Is
An embedded SIM chip permanently integrated into your device. Stores carrier profiles as software. No physical card required.
02
How It Works
Profiles are downloaded via QR code over Wi-Fi. The eUICC chip stores them securely. Switch between profiles in device settings.
03
Why It Matters
Activate before departure. Maintain your home number. Cover 30+ European countries with one plan. No physical SIM handling.

Getting Connected in Four Steps

01

Verify Device Compatibility

Check that your device has an eUICC chip and is carrier-unlocked. Navigate to Settings > Cellular and look for an "Add eSIM" option. Most flagship devices from 2018 onward qualify.

02

Select Your Plan

Choose between regional plans (30+ countries) for multi-destination trips or country-specific plans for single-destination stays. Consider data allowance, duration, and coverage carefully.

03

Scan and Activate

Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM. Scan the QR code provided after purchase. The profile downloads in 2–5 minutes over Wi-Fi. Do not close the settings app during download.

04

Enable Data Roaming

After installation, navigate to Settings > Cellular and enable Data Roaming for the new eSIM line. Set it as your data line. This step is critical—without it, the eSIM will not connect.

Questions

What is AlraloeSIM?
AlraloeSIM is an independent editorial publication providing accurate, unbiased information about eSIM technology and European travel connectivity. We have no commercial relationships with any carrier or eSIM provider.
Does eSIM work across all of Europe?
eSIM technology is supported across EU member states and most EEA countries. Coverage for non-EU destinations including Switzerland, the UK, and Turkey varies by plan. Always verify specific country inclusion before purchase.
Can I use two eSIM profiles simultaneously?
On Dual SIM devices, you can have two lines active simultaneously—typically one for calls (your home SIM or eSIM) and one for data (your travel eSIM). The exact configuration depends on your device model.
What's the difference between eSIM and a physical SIM?
An eSIM is permanently embedded in your device and stores profiles as software. A physical SIM is a removable card. eSIM offers convenience (activate without a store visit), security (harder to physically steal), and flexibility (multiple stored profiles).
